UAE university students can now get rewarded through an app for locking their phone screens during class.
We’ve all been tempted to use our phones during a boring lecture to pass time. However, how often have we gotten rewarded for taking the initiative to pay attention in class and stay offline? (SERIOUSLY THOUGH 😂😂)
The new app Lock&Stock is an application where points can be earned by students whenever they lock their phones via using the app. The best part? These points can be redeemed as discounts at various outlets around the UAE.
Get an education while not getting distracted AND get rewarded in the process? Also… guess what, this app is for FREE! (I had to underline it for ya)!💃👯
The application was developed to encourage students to learn while paying attention in class without the distraction of their phones. The rewards are meant to be an added benefit so students benefit by not only receiving a lesson without any distractions but can enjoy after classes as well (better alternative to outright banning the use of cell phones 😏😏). Craig Fernandes, the co-founder and CEO of the new app stated, “I love social media as much as the next person, but like all things out there, I think there is both a good and a bad side to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and the like.” He believes that students these days are becoming addicted to such an extreme that their education is suffering.
How does the app work?
Students receive 1 point for every 3 minutes their phones stays locked. These points can then be used to redeem discounts from establishments that have partnered with Lock&Stock across UAE. With over 50 brands, Lock&Stock has something for every student as these brands range from food and beverages, fashion, entertainment, fitness, and wellbeing. Some partners have provided up to 50% of discounts (😳) while others have signed up to provide upgrades and freebies.
Some of the companies partnered with Lock&Stock:
- Novo Cinemas
- Charley’s Philly Steaks
- Millennium Plaza Hotel
The registration process is fairly simple;
Be warned though, the app canNOT be tricked and is programmed to function only in your university. The app cannot be unlocked if you’re not inside a class as your location is the key to activate the app, according to Fernandes.
